The Mat Matters Report
Toyota Arena, Ontario, California, USA - November 14, 2023 (Taped for broadcast on November 22, 2023)
Attendance: 3429
In the world of professional wrestling, it's not just about the flash, the flair, or the spectacle. No, at its core, this sport is about competition, skill, and a deep understanding of the art itself. And that's exactly what we saw on this night in Ontario, California as Ring Of Honor brought their unique brand of grappling to the Toyota Arena.
The evening kicked off with Katsuyori Shibata defending his ROH Pure Title against Trent Beretta. This was a battle of wits, as both men showcased their mastery of submission holds and technical grappling. Shibata's experience proved to be the deciding factor, as he locked in the Kimura to secure the victory (08:26).
Next up was a Four Corner Survival Match featuring Willow Nightingale, Diamante, Kiera Hogan, and Trish Adora. This was a wild ride from start to finish, with each competitor looking to assert their dominance. In the end, it was Nightingale who emerged victorious, displaying her impressive aerial skills and quickness (05:01).
Ethan Page continued his winning ways with a victory over Tony Nese in a hard-hitting singles match. These two brawlers went toe-to-toe, trading blows and near-falls until Page finally put Nese away with a devastating lariat (06:13).
The Four Way Tag Team Match that followed was a true test of endurance and teamwork. The WorkHorsemen (Anthony Henry and JD Drake), The Infantry (Carlie Bravo and Shawn Dean), Iron Savages (Boulder and Bronson), and The West Coast Wrecking Crew (Jorel Nelson and Royce Isaacs) all clashed in a thrilling match that saw the WorkHorsemen ultimately emerge victorious (06:36).
In what was arguably the most intriguing match of the evening, Wheeler Yuta faced off against Lee Moriarty in a Pure Rules Match. These two technical wizards went back and forth, trading holds and counters until Yuta finally secured the win with a clever roll-up (08:34).
The Four Corner Survival Match that followed featured Lee Johnson, Fred Rosser, Jack Cartwheel, and Willie Mack. This was another wild and unpredictable affair, with each competitor looking to stand out from the pack. In the end, it was Johnson who emerged victorious, displaying his impressive athleticism and agility (05:19).
Finally, Marina Shafir and Ronda Rousey took on Athena and Billie Starkz in a tag team match that stole the show. These four women put on a masterclass display of grappling and striking, with Rousey's power and Shafir's technical prowess ultimately proving too much for their opponents (16:00).
As we left the Toyota Arena that night, it was clear that this event had something for everyone. Whether you're a fan of high-flying action, technical grappling, or simply great competition, Ring Of Honor delivered in spades. And with matches like these, it's no wonder why ROH remains one of the premier promotions in professional wrestling today.
