Impact Wrestling: Slammiversary XII Review
Arlington, Texas - College Park Center - June 10, 2012
The wrestling world descended upon the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas last night as Impact Wrestling presented Slammiversary XII, a stacked pay-per-view card that delivered on its promise of high-flying action and hard-hitting drama. Here's my take on the proceedings:
Match of the Night: Austin Aries vs. Samoa Joe
The X-Division Championship match between these two grappling giants was an instant classic. Aries' aerial assault was countered by Joe's relentless power, resulting in a thrilling back-and-forth contest that saw both men trading near-falls and showing off their technical prowess. In the end, it was Aries who emerged victorious, retaining his title with a picture-perfect 450 splash. This match cemented its place as the best of the night, showcasing the very best of what Impact has to offer.
The Good Stuff:
- Hernandez's dominant performance against Kid Kash in their singles match was a pleasant surprise. The big man showed off his strength and agility, finishing Kash with a thunderous powerslam.
- Mr. Anderson's #1 Contendership victory over Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam was a masterclass in ring psychology. Anderson played the perfect babyface, outwrestling both opponents to earn the right to challenge Bobby Roode for the Impact World Title.
- AJ Styles and Kurt Angle's Tag Team Championship defense against Christopher Daniels and Kazarian was an excellent example of teamwork and strategy. The former Olympic gold medalist and the Phenomenal One worked seamlessly together to retain their titles, putting on a clinic in the process.
The Not-So-Good Stuff:
- Devon and Garett Bischoff's tag team victory over Robbie E and Robbie T was a squash match that served little purpose other than padding out the card. The crowd was lukewarm at best for this one.
- James Storm's quick win over Crimson was another bout that failed to leave an impression. The Storm frontman's offense looked stiff, and the match itself felt like an afterthought.
Main Event: Bobby Roode vs. Sting
In a shocking upset, Bobby Roode dethroned Sting to retain his Impact World Title in a thrilling match that saw both men trading near-falls and showing off their veteran savvy. The match was a testament to the enduring legacy of both competitors, with Roode's cunning and experience ultimately proving too much for the Icon.
Overall Thoughts:
Slammiversary XII was a solid pay-per-view effort from Impact Wrestling, with a few standout matches that made it worth the investment. While some bouts fell flat, the overall card showed a good balance of styles and stories, making for an entertaining evening of professional wrestling. With Aries retaining his X-Division title and Roode defending his World Title, the future looks bright for Impact's top talent.
Grade: B+
