Zohash Report: WCW Mayhem (05/07/00)

Well, folks, it's your boy Simmons here, reporting from the trenches of professional wrestling. I've got the lowdown on WCW's latest pay-per-view extravaganza, Mayhem, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride.

Cruiserweight Chaos Chris Candido kicked things off with a swift win over The Artist for the WCW World Cruiserweight Title. This match was all about high-flying acrobatics, with both competitors trading moves like they were playing a game of WWE-oke. Candido's innovative offense won out in the end, but I'm not sure if we'll be seeing much more from The Artist anytime soon.

Hardcore Havoc Terry Funk, Norman Smiley, and Ralphus got together for a three-on-one handicap match, with Funk emerging victorious to retain his WCW Hardcore Title. This was your typical hardcore mayhem – lots of chair shots, tables breaking, and general anarchy. I'm just glad nobody got seriously hurt.

Stasiak's Sweet Victory Shawn Stasiak picked up a win over Curt Hennig in a straightforward singles match. Stasiak showed some decent skills, but let's be real, this was more about Hennig's declining abilities than any major upset. Still, props to Stasiak for getting the W.

United States Title Tussle Scott Steiner successfully defended his WCW United States Title against General Rection in a quick and dirty match. Steiner's powerbombs are always a crowd-pleaser, and this one was no exception. Rection put up a good fight, but ultimately came up short.

Kanyon vs. Awesome: The Unholy Mess Chris Kanyon and Mike Awesome got together for what promised to be an exciting singles match... until it abruptly ended in a no-contest due to outside interference. I'm not sure if this was intentional or just a botched spot, but it left fans scratching their heads.

Package Deal The Total Package (a.k.a. Kevin Nash) crushed Buff Bagwell in another straightforward singles match. Bagwell's offense looked like a desperate attempt to get the crowd behind him – sorry, buddy, you're not exactly the most sympathetic character.

Franchise vs. Flair: A Thrill Ride Ric Flair got his usual dose of disrespect from The Franchise (a.k.a. Jeff Jarrett), who won via submission. This was a great match while it lasted, with both men trading moves and showing off their respective skill sets. Flair's signature figure-four made its usual appearance, but in the end, The Franchise proved too slippery.

Sting vs. Vampiro: A Breeze Sting took down Vampiro with ease in a singles match that felt more like a squash than an actual contest. Vampiro's been getting a lot of hype lately, but it seems like WCW wants to keep him down for now.

Hogan vs. Kidman: The Main Event Mayhem And finally, we have the main event: Hulk Hogan vs. Billy Kidman. This was an absolute barnburner – Kidman's speed and agility were no match for Hogan's sheer power. The Hulkster won in convincing fashion, proving once again that he's still got it.

The Real Main Event: Jarrett's Triple Cage Shocker But wait, there's more! Jeff Jarrett won the World Heavyweight Title in a bizarre triple cage match against David Arquette and Diamond Dallas Page. I'm not even sure how to describe this one – think of three wrestlers trapped in separate cages, trying to outmaneuver each other while avoiding getting eliminated. It was like watching a WWE version of "The Running Man" (the movie, not the '80s TV show). In the end, Jarrett emerged victorious and left the crowd stunned.

Final Thoughts Mayhem turned out to be a fun ride, with some solid wrestling matches and a few memorable moments. The Triple Cage Match was undoubtedly the highlight of the evening – who knew David Arquette had it in him? All joking aside, this event showed that WCW still has some life left in them, even if their booking choices are sometimes questionable.

That's all for now from your boy Simmons. Until next time, stay wrestled!
