Jimmy del Ray

The Unlikely Rise and Tragic Fall of Jimmy del Ray

In a career that spanned nearly two decades, Jimmy del Ray was many things: technician, grappler, showman. But to fans of the squared circle, he was also something more – a reminder that even the most unlikely of wrestlers could make it big with heart, determination, and a healthy dose of charisma.

Born David Ferrier on November 30th, 1962, in Grove City, Pennsylvania, del Ray's path to professional wrestling was far from conventional. A self-proclaimed "gym rat" since his teenage years, he began training at the tender age of 17, eventually working his way up the indie circuit under the guidance of veteran grappler, Ricky Steamboat.

It wasn't long before del Ray's unique blend of technical prowess and high-flying antics caught the attention of promoters and fans alike. He began to make a name for himself as Jimmy Backlund, Jim Backlund, Jimmy Graffiti, Jomo Kenya, Jimmy Richland, and – most famously – Jim (later Jimmy) del Ray.

The latter moniker, adopted in the early 1990s, stuck like glue, and with it came a slew of memorable matches against some of the biggest names in the business. His signature moonsault, a move that would become synonymous with his daredevil persona, left opponents and fans alike in awe.

But del Ray's greatest attribute wasn't his impressive aerial assault or his uncanny ability to adapt his style to suit any opponent – it was his infectious enthusiasm. A true student of the sport, he approached every match as if it were a chance to tell a story, to convey emotion through the ebb and flow of action.

The Tragic End

And then, just as del Ray's star seemed to be on the rise, it all came crashing down. On December 6th, 2014, his life was tragically cut short in a car accident that left many wondering what could have been.

In retrospect, perhaps it's fitting that Jimmy del Ray's final act should be one of humility – a reminder that even the most hardened wrestlers are human beings first and foremost. As we reflect on the life and career of this unlikely hero, let us not forget the countless memories he brought to fans around the world or the indelible mark his signature moonsault left on our collective psyche.

Jimmy del Ray may be gone, but the impact he had on professional wrestling will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Gigolo.
