Born Sean John Morley in Oakville, Ontario, Canada in 1971, Venis grew up with a passion for bodybuilding and sports. After high school, he turned pro, competing in various regional and national bodybuilding competitions.

Wrestling was just a natural extension of his athletic pursuits. Venis' first gig came in the early 1990s with various independent promotions in Canada. He quickly made a name for himself as "Big Valbowski," a moniker that stuck throughout his career. As he honed his skills, Venis began to make waves in the international wrestling scene. He joined WWE (then WWF) in 1999, debuting under the ring name Chief Morley. The moniker was short-lived, however, as Venis soon adopted the more attention-grabbing Sean Morley.
